How percentage grades work

A percentage grade is simply your score as a share of the total: points earned ÷ points possible × 100. Scoring 47 of 50 gives 94%. The letter grade then comes from a scale — a table that maps percentage ranges to letters. The standard US scale used by this letter grade calculator is:

Letter gradePercentageGPA points
A+97–1004.0
A93–964.0
A-90–923.7
B+87–893.3
B83–863.0
B-80–822.7
C+77–792.3
C73–762.0
C-70–721.7
D+67–691.3
D63–661.0
D-60–620.7
FBelow 600.0

Some teachers skip plus and minus grades entirely. In that whole-letter system, 90–100% is an A, 80–89% a B, 70–79% a C, 60–69% a D and below 60% an F — turn off the +/− switch above to convert that way, and see both charts side by side on the grading scale chart page.

From one assignment to a whole course

A single percentage is easy. A course grade is harder, because assignments carry different weights — a 94% quiz worth 10% of your grade matters far less than a 78% midterm worth 30%. The weighted grade calculator combines all your percentages properly, and the final grade calculator shows what your last exam needs to be.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert points to a percentage grade?

Divide the points you earned by the points possible, then multiply by 100. For example, 47 out of 50 is 47 ÷ 50 × 100 = 94% — an A. The calculator at the top of this page does it and shows the letter grade and GPA points too.

What is the percentage to letter grade conversion?

On the standard US scale: 93–100% = A, 90–92% = A-, 87–89% = B+, 83–86% = B, 80–82% = B-, 77–79% = C+, 73–76% = C, 70–72% = C-, 67–69% = D+, 63–66% = D, 60–62% = D-, below 60% = F. The full chart is in the table on this page.

What percentage is a B?

A B is 83–86% on the standard plus/minus scale. B+ is 87–89% and B- is 80–82%. On the whole-letter scale some schools use, any score from 80% to 89% is a B.

What is 45 out of 50 as a percentage?

45 ÷ 50 × 100 = 90%, which is an A- on the standard scale (93%+ is an A). Try any score in the calculator above — it converts points to a percentage and letter grade as you type.

Do all schools use the same percentage-to-letter scale?

No. Some schools set an A at 90% instead of 93%, some drop plus/minus grades, and some subjects (especially in college) use their own scales. This letter grade calculator uses the most common US scale; always confirm your own school's chart in the student handbook.

How does a letter grade calculator help with GPA?

Each letter grade equals GPA points: A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, down to F = 0.0. Once you know your letters, the GPA calculator averages them across your courses, weighted by credit hours.
